Scylla, in Greek mythology, sea monster living between Italy and Sicily and its name was given respectively to a whirlpool and a rock of this strait.
On the opposite shore, Italian, lives Scylla, a monstrous creature endowed with twelve legs and six dog heads each carried by a disproportionate neck and terminated by a mouth provided with three rows of teeth; her appetite is fierce and she devours any creature, animal or human, within her reach.
The ships which divert their course to avoid Charybde (monster on the Sicilian side) inevitably fall between the claws of Scylla.
Charybdis and Scylla personify the dangers of navigation at sea. Their legend gave birth to the expression “falling from Charybdis in Scylla”, which means to avoid one misfortune to know another worse.
