Icarus, in Greek mythology, son of the architect and inventor Daedalus, having died while flying too close to the sun. Icarus was born from the union of Daedalus, the architect of the king of Crete Minos, and Naucraté, a court slave.
His father once betrayed Minos by supplying Theseus, through Ariane, with the trick that will allow him to escape the Labyrinth after killing the Minotaur. Furious, Minos decides to punish Daedalus for his betrayal by locking him up in the Labyrinth, and Icarus with him.
The tragic story of Icarus is sometimes seen as symbolizing the dangers that await those who are driven by over-consuming ambition or reckless recklessness. The expression “burn your wings” is close to this legend.
