Ganymede, in Greek mythology, the young and handsome Trojan prince, identified by the Ancients with the constellation Aquarius, “the Water Pourer”, and whose name was given to one of the satellites of the planet Jupiter.
Ganymede is the son of Tros, king of Phrygia, and Callirhoé, daughter of the river god Scamander. Seduced by the young man’s great beauty, Zeus, having taken the shape of an eagle, takes it from his companions to transport it to Mount Olympus. There he grants her immortality. Ganymede then replaced Hebe, goddess of youth, responsible for serving nectar and ragweed to the gods.
