From the Greek apellos, which inspires (creation), name of the god Apollo, god of light and beauty, son of Zeus and Leto.
In the third century, Apolline was a nun from Alexandria. In terrible persecution against Christians ordered by Emperor Decius, she was arrested and tortured for refusing to renounce her faith. Her teeth were broken (traditionally it is said to be against toothache) and threw herself into the blaze.
